Training Tip - Stop Over-Repeating Commands

If you’ve ever found yourself saying “sit… sit… SIT!”, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the most common habits we see in dog training, and honestly, it’s an easy trap to fall into. But here’s the thing: over-repeating commands can actually teach your dog to ignore you.

🚩 Why repeating commands causes problems

Dogs learn through patterns and consistency. When we repeat a command multiple times, our dogs quickly learn that the first cue doesn’t really matter, because another one (or five) is coming.

Over time, this can lead to:

• Slower responses

• Selective listening

• Needing louder or harsher cues

• Frustration for both dog and handler

Instead of learning “sit means sit now,” the dog learns “I can wait until the third or fourth time.”

✅ What to do instead

Say it once. Mean it. Help your dog succeed.

Here’s the simple framework we recommend at Shimmy Downs:

1. Give the cue once - Clear, calm, and confident. No repeating.

2. Pause and give your dog a moment - Many dogs just need a second or two to process.

3. Follow through if needed - If your dog doesn’t respond, calmly guide them into the correct behaviour (using lead pressure, positioning, or the skills you’ve been shown in training).

4. Reward the correct response with praise and a pat.

Set your dog up to win

If your dog is regularly ignoring cues, ask yourself:

• Are there too many distractions?

• Does my dog truly understand the behaviour yet?

• Have I practised enough in low-pressure environments?

Remember, reliability is built step by step.

New behaviour = more guidance, less expectation Well-known behaviour = one cue, then follow through
