What We Do

At Shimmy Downs Kelpies, we specialise in training working breed dogs using their natural instincts, primarily through sheep work.

We offer a range of training options to suit different dogs and handlers, including:

  • One-on-one training sessions

  • Small group classes (Foundation, Development and Performance levels)

  • Puppy starter classes

  • DIY training sessions (experienced dogs & handlers only)

  • Private group bookings and demonstrations

Alongside training, we also breed kelpie pups from proven working lines. Our breeding program focuses on producing versatile, capable dogs that are confident working in the yard, on the truck and out in the paddock.

We primarily breed pups for working homes, where their natural ability can be fully utilised. Active pet homes may be considered and placed on a waitlist, however working homes are always prioritised.

Our training and breeding go hand in hand, giving us a deep understanding of how these dogs think, learn and perform at every stage.

What We're About

We’re all about helping working dogs do what they were bred to do and helping their owners understand them along the way.

We believe that many behaviour challenges in working breeds come down to a lack of mental stimulation, clarity and direction. When you tap into a dog’s natural instincts in the right way, everything starts to make more sense for both dog and handler.

Our approach is simple:

  • Keep it practical

  • Keep it clear

  • Keep it fair on the dog

That same philosophy carries through to our breeding, producing honest, capable dogs with the temperament and ability to thrive in real working environments.

We’re not about quick fixes or over-complication. We focus on building solid foundations, reading your dog, and giving you the tools to continue your training at home.

Above all, we want every person who comes through Shimmy Downs to feel welcome and part of the SDK crew; leaving feeling more confident, more capable, and more connected to their dog.
