The Story Behind the Name: Shimmy Downs Kelpies

Ever wondered where Shimmy Downs Kelpies gets its name? Like most good stories, it starts with a bit of love, a bit of land, and a whole lot of dogs.

The “Shimmy” Part

Long before there were paddocks and training classes, there was just Shell (Michelle) and Jimmy (James). Mix the two together, and you get Shimmy. Yep, one of those 'couple names', and it’s stuck with us ever since.

The “Downs” Part

“Downs” isn’t just a fancy add-on — this patch of earth is more than a workplace; it’s where our story as a family really began. On the 10th of November 2018, we got married here, surrounded by family, friends, the paddocks and trees we love so much. Our wedding was a true DIY affair, right down to the arch that Shell's Dad (Mark) and James built. That same arch still stands proudly in our backyard and makes a cameo in our anniversary photo every single year.

Also, for those who haven't seen the videos on our social media, James is quite the dancer so it was very apt to name our farm after a dance move!

And the Kelpies

By the time it came to naming our business, the answer was obvious. Our name had to carry the heart of who we are — the love story, the land we call home, and of course, the dogs who are part of our family and livelihood.

So Shimmy Downs Kelpies was born — a name that holds our history, our home, and our passion in just three little words.

It’s more than a name on a sign; it’s our story, and we’re so glad to share it with you.
