Helping You Choose the Best Training Type for You and Your Dog
At Shimmy Downs Kelpies, we know that no two dogs—or owners—are the same. When it comes to training, one of the most common questions we’re asked is:“Should I book a group class or a one-on-one session?”
First and foremost, we work with all working breeds whether they are a family pet living in town, a puppy looking to get started with training to work on a farm, a current farm worker looking to fine tune their skills or anything in between. We believe that all working breeds need an outlet for their natural instincts and drive and we love being able to provide that for our clients.
Both training options offer unique benefits, especially for working breeds like Kelpies or Border Collies.
Let’s explore the differences so you can choose what’s right for you and your dog.
1:1 Dog Training – Tailored and Focused
Best for:
✔ Young or green dogs just starting out
✔ Dogs with specific challenges or behavioural issues
✔ Owners wanting personalised support
✔ Dogs easily distracted or overwhelmed in busy environments
What to expect: One-on-one training is completely tailored to your dog’s needs and pace. We work with you and your dog in a quieter setting— on livestock—focusing on the foundations or challenges most relevant to your goals. Whether you need help with basic obedience, building drive, introducing stock work, or troubleshooting unwanted behaviour, you’ll get focused attention and fast progress.
“1:1 is ideal when you're just getting started, or when your dog needs a bit of extra guidance to get on track.”

Intro to Working Dog Class – A Gentle First Step into Stock Work
Best for:
✔ Dogs and owners new to sheep or herding work
✔ Owners unsure if their dog is ready for our main group sessions
✔ Building confidence without pressure
✔ Learning safe and respectful stock handling
What to expect: Our Intro to Working Dog class is a small-group session designed for beginners. It provides a low-pressure environmentwhere dogs are introduced to sheep safely and at their own pace. We cover reading stock, initial instincts, safe handling, and building confidence without overwhelming your dog—or you.
You’ll receive guidance on switching your dog onto farm work, and where to head next—be that one-on-one work, regular group classes, or more specialised stock training.
“Think of this class as a 'try-out' for herding—gentle, informative, and highly supportive.”

Group Classes – Social, Supportive, and Stimulating
Best for:
✔ Dogs and owners who already have some basic training
✔ Building social confidence
✔ Learning to focus around other dogs and distractions
✔ Owners wanting to learn from others' experiences
What to expect: Group classes offer a dynamic training environment where dogs work alongside others, often on sheep. They get the chance to observe, engage, and practise impulse control while still working their instincts. It's also a fantastic opportunity for owners to watch, learn, and share tips with other handlers.
“Group classes help your dog learn how to work while staying calm around other dogs and stock—a crucial skill for any working dog.”
